Mani Monday: Polka Dots

Hello everybody. Welcome to the first edition of Mani Monday! Today I'll be showing you all a nice and easy manicure to try: polka dots. It's fun without being over the top. It's cute without being childish. It's simple without being boring. Sounds good if you ask me. Shall we get started?

Not just yet.....if you're like me and you HATE cleaning up your nails after painting them, then you can use a few different techniques to assist you in the cleaning process. You can take a small paintbrush and paint Elmer's White Glue on and around your cuticle, let it dry, and peel it and any extra polish right off when you're done. You can also wrap clear tape around your fingers, and this is especially good if you're doing water marble nails as this can get VERY messy. If you have the time and patience though, you can just use a q-tip(cotton swab) to clean around your nails when you finish for a clean and polished look. NOW we'll really get started.

The things you will need:
Base Coat
Base Color
2nd Color for Polka Dots
Top Coat
Dotting Tool(or q-tip)
Nail Polish Remover(for cleaning up)
Elmer's White Glue(optional)

Step 1: To start off, paint your nails with a base coat to prevent staining your nails with the polish. This step is key to giving the polish a good foundation and saving hours of frustration. If you decide to use a dark base color, I suggest applying 2 coats of the base coat.

Step 2: Next, you will paint your nails with one coat of your base color of choice. I chose Jeanne, which is a baby blue, as my base color. After the first coat has dried, which should take about 10 minutes, you will paint a second coat of your base color for a fully opaque look.

Step 3: Now for the fun part: the polka dots. There are many ways to execute this part of the manicure. You can use a variety of dotting tools depending on how small or large you want your dots to be; however, if you don't have dotting tools, you can use other easily found household items to create your dots, including a bobby pin or even a q-tip. In my case, I chose to use a q-tip because I wanted really big dots. Just be sure to get one that isn't fuzzy so that you don't have any extra polish landing on your nail as you paint the dots. Start at the base of your nail and paint two dots(or however many you can fit in a straight row). After painting this row of dots, paint dots both above and in between the first dots(refer to second picture below). Continue doing this until you reach the top of your nail. Repeat this for each nail and let the dots dry for 10-15 minutes.

Step 4: After your nails are completely dry, apply a top coat to protect your design and to make it last throughout the week. Use a q-tip dipped in nail polish remover to clean up around your nails, or you can use one of the techniques listed above. Reapply a top coat every other day to ensure a long-lasting manicure.
